ABOUT MIKE

The Central Valley has been my home since childhood. I grew up in Merced, attending local public schools, and it was my privilege to serve for two terms as the mayor of my hometown. During my tenure, we improved public safety readiness and response, created a budget surplus, ensured clean drinking water for all residents, reduced homelessness, invested in public roads and infrastructure, developed safe routes to school for students, increased opportunities for higher education in the Central Valley, and reduced government red tape.

While in office, I led the city’s partnership with UC Merced to support Project 2020 which doubled the size of the campus in just four years and increased its capacity to 10,000 students.

After my second term as Mayor, I chaired the Committee for a Safer Merced comprised of community members. Our team wrote a local ballot measure to protect police and fire funding in the city and gathered enough signatures to get it on the ballot. Voters overwhelmingly passed our initiative with more than 2/3rds of the vote.

Although I have always kept my hometown roots, I’ve had opportunities and accomplishments in other regions. I am the first in my family to graduate from college. After graduation, I put myself through Georgetown Law School and then practiced law representing small businesses in important business transactions and helping them to employ more people

I am a senior fellow with the American Leadership Forum, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to join and strengthen diverse leaders to better serve the public good. I am also involved in my local church congregation with a particular focus on mentoring youth as they navigate junior high, high school and begin to enter higher education and the workforce.

Heather and I have raised our family in the valley by choice. We want to raise our children in a family-friendly environment around extended family and good friends. We have four kids who we’ve supported in their FFA projects, sports teams, and performing arts endeavors. Our youngest son attends public high school and our other children are now young adults in the workforce or pursuing higher education. Our oldest son is wheelchair bound having been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of 4, and is thriving now as a young adult.

“I am committed to reducing the cost of living for families, keeping our communities safe, , protecting our water supply, creating economic opportunities for all, and being held to account as a leader. Please join me in making our vision for the Central Valley a reality.”
